Since I was very small, I knew that I had the need to create. My Dad would bring home office memos that were to be thrown out, and I used the back —and spent hours and hours drawing. I could never stay inside the lines in a coloring book!!! My Mother gave me scraps of fabric, and I made doll clothes, and eventually learned to sew my own clothes. In college, I majored in Textiles and Clothing Design, and spent many years in Fashion Retail Management. I later opened my own Fabric store. Once it closed, and I had closets full of samples I’d sewn, I did not need any more clothes! I decided to draw on my creative art skills, and use fabric to create pieces to hang on the wall. My years of making “Art-Quilts”had begun!
My art quilts are made up of lot of small pieces of fabric - both commercially dyed, and hand dyed by me, that are hand cut, then fused into the background then heavily stitched. The technique can also be called “raw-edge appliqué” as the edges are not turned under, but are held in place by the fusing process.
I have always loved the look and feel of fabric. I have also always loved the ocean and all of its’ creatures, so many of my quilts are of a nautical theme! To combine my talents of art and fabric manipulation and turn them into art quilts has been very rewarding, and lots of fun. I hope my customers think they are beautiful and fun, too!
I also use fabric scraps to create evening handbags with colorful linings, and snappy closures that call attention to the wearer’s sense of style! I hope my customer’s wear my ONE-OF-A-KIND handbags and get loads of compliments!!!
